    Residents: Household Hazardous Waste Programs

The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District recommends Household Hazardous Waste Management Programs that provide local residents with environmentally safe and convenient ways to dispose of unwanted hazardous household products--such as paints, solvents, fuels, cleaners, pesticides, etc., which contain hazardous substances.

Many of the area municipalities and counties have recycling programs that also accept antifreeze, motor oil, used oil filters, household batteries, auto batteries and other recyclables. Please contact your municipality or county for more information on how to properly dispose of household hazardous wastes.

Our main message, however, emphasizes the ultimate solution to the household hazardous waste problem is to reduce dependence on toxic/hazardous products and use them only when necessary. If possible, use less toxic/hazardous alternatives. We encourage you to buy only those toxic/hazardous products and quantities that you need and use them appropriately to completion.

Throwing these products away (even through the various local programs) should be viewed as a last resort. Please contact your municipality or county for more information on waste minimization.
