    July 16, 2008 - METRO WASTEWATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT BOARD APPROVES 2009 BUDGET. The board approved the 2009 budget last night at the District’s regular monthly board meeting.     April 15, 2008 - EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION SYSTEM TESTING SET FOR APRIL 16. The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District will conduct a test of its plant-wide alarm and communication systems on Wednesday, April 16, at about 7:15 p.m. at its treatment facility at 6450 York Street.     April 7, 2008 - METRO WASTEWATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT SENDS HELP TO ALAMOSA .     March 13, 2008 - METRO DISTRICT RECOMMENDS KITTY LITTER FOR DRUG DISPOSAL. The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District is aware of concerns generated by recent media stories about trace amounts of pharmaceuticals and personal care products being found in drinking water. The District recommends disposing of unwanted medications by mixing them with used kitty litter or coffee grounds, wrapping that mixture in a nondescript wrapper, and disposing of the unwanted medications in the trash.     September 13, 2006 - DENVER, Sept. 13 — METRO DISTRICT PLANS SOUTH PLATTE AQUATIC LIFE HABITAT IMPROVEMENTS. The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District is planning $5.94 million in habitat improvements for a reach of the South Platte River near Henderson, CO. The improvements will go in the area between the Brantner Ditch diversion and Henderson Road. Specific improvements include backwater pools, riffles, snags, spur dikes, and bank revegetation.     June 20, 2006 - Molybdenum-containing water treatment chemicals to be banned. Building owners have until Jan. 1, 2007, to comply. After Jan. 1, 2007, the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District (Metro) says molybdenum-containing water treatment chemicals cannot be discharged to its sanitary sewer system. Theresa Pfeifer, Metro’s regulatory compliance officer, said violators could face penalties of up to $32,500 a day for each prohibited discharge after Jan. 1.     January 9, 2006 - METROGRO® COMPOST PRICE INCREASES — The price of METROGRO® Compost increased from $2 a bag to $3 a bag on Jan. 1, according to Mitch Costanzo, head of the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District’s Resource Recovery and Reuse Department.     August 8, 2005 - METRO WASTEWATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT PASSES 3RD PARTY AUDIT — National Biosolids Partnership certifies Metro’s Environmental Management System for Biosolids. The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District (Metro) has been notified by the National Biosolids Partnership that its Environmental Management System (EMS) for Biosolids program has been certified, effective July 30, 2005.     July 13, 2005 - GAS LEAK CAUSES METRO WASTEWATER TO EVACUATE FACILITY — Because of a gas leak this afternoon at the Suncor refinery facilities in Commerce City adjacent to the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District’s Central Treatment Plant at 6450 York Street, Metro’s employees have been evacuated from the facility and sent home as a safety precaution.     May 02, 2005 - DENVER’S METRO WASTEWATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT RECOGNIZED FOR 10 PERFECT YEARS -- WASHINGTON, DC, May 2 — The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District has won its second consecutive Platinum Award from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA, formerly the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies) for its second five-year period without a single numerical violation of its discharge permit.     March 8, 2005 - DISADVANTAGED BUSINESSES GET MORE ORDERS FROM METRO IN 2004 -- Almost 19 percent, or $4,040,705, of the $21.3 million the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District spent on goods and services (excluding engineering services) in 2004 went to disadvantaged business enterprises (DBEs), according to a report presented to the Metro District’s Board of Directors recently.     October 20, 2004 - Some endocrine disrupting chemicals may defy wastewater treatment -- The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District is concerned that recent news coverage about fish with both male and female sex tissues found in the South Platte River downstream of the Metro District’s treatment plant may be causing unwarranted concern. News coverage focused on a class of chemicals called endocrine disruptors — mostly estrogen and chemicals that mimic estrogen. Endocrine disruptors are a subset of a larger group of chemicals often referred to as pharmaceuticals and personal care products. (For more information, click here)



    October 4, 2004 - TWO COLORADO ORGANIZATIONS WIN TOP NATIONAL EPA AWARD FOR THEIR BIOSOLIDS PROGRAMS -- Two Colorado organizations tied for first place nationally in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s annual Exemplary Biosolids Management Award competition. The organizations are the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District, which serves metro Denver, and Parker Ag Services LLC, headquartered in Limon.     February 5, 2004 - Don't use Copper Sulfate to kill tree roots says Metro Wastewater Reclamation Distict -- The agency that provides sewage treatment for more than 50 cities and sanitation districts in the Denver metro area says using products containing copper sulfate to kill tree roots that may be invading homeowners’ sewer pipes is a bad idea, and homeowners shouldn’t do it.     September 2, 2003 - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has named the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District’s industrial waste pretreatment program the best in the nation in its size category.     May 29, 2003 - The Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies (AMSA) awarded the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District its eighth consecutive Gold Award for complete compliance with its Colorado Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit requirements at AMSA’s 33rd Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. The award recognizes the Metro District for complying with some 10,000 chemical and biological tests used to determine water quality during 2002. (For more information, click here)



    May 28, 2003 - The Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies (AMSA) awarded the 2003 National Environmental Achievement Award in the Public Information & Education -- Education Program category to the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District at its 33rd Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.     April 9, 2003 - The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District plans a 10-year, $600 million facility improvement program to handle the area's population growth, improve the quality of the water it discharges into the South Platte River, and upgrade or replace some older facilities.
