Farming Plan: Crops
Due to fall and winter precipitation, winter wheat planted in the fall of 2006 emerged into healthy stands in early spring 2007. Late spring moisture needed for the wheat to continue growth through harvest was received and the wheat yields are looking to be better than they have been in past years. Only hard red wheat was planted on the Farm this year. Even though there was only one type of wheat planted, there were several different varieties including a Russian Wheat Aphid resistant variety and a semi-dwarf variety. Winter barley was not planted on the Farm this crop year. Those areas with significant winter wheat losses will be re-planted with spring crops to establish cover if sufficient moisture is available. The replacement crop will be sorghum/sudan grass also known as haygrazer. Haygrazer is also being planted on the North Farm property to get approximately 240 acres back into the correct crop rotation.
