    Did You Know:
    • All the water that's ever existed on Earth--or ever will exist--is here right now. This water has been with us for 4 1/2 billion years. That is why it is important for us to conserve it and why we must treat it after we've used it--so that others can use it again.
    • Water that goes down a sink or toilet in metropolitan Denver takes from 4 to 24 hours to reach the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District’s Central Treatment Plant where it is treated and released to the South Platte River 10 to 12 hours later.
    • The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District Central Treatment Plant processes about 160 million gallons of water EACH DAY? (Ever wonder how we do that?)
    • The water that goes down gutters and storm drains to creeks, streams, and rivers does not get cleaned, so we all need to do our part to keep pet waste, excess fertilizer, pesticides, motor oil, anti freeze, and other pollutants out of gutters and storm drains.
    What do our Programs Offer:
    • Fun, interactive programs for local classrooms.
    • Teaches students the basic concepts of how wastewater is treated prior to being returned to the environment.
    • Is interdisciplinary--microbiology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science.
    • Links science and technology to environmental impacts and issues.
    • Fosters an awareness about the fate of household chemicals.
    • Encourages students to take responsibility for the household products that they use.

The Metro District’s educational programs are structured to meet the educational needs while addressing the outreach needs of wastewater treatment agencies. As part of our ongoing pollution prevention efforts, the Metro District provides water quality-related educational programs to public and private schools within our Service Area. The Metro District reaches about 100 classrooms each year. We work one-on-one with teachers to tailor our programs to meet student needs. The programs cover a variety of water-quality topics for grade levels ranging from elementary school to high school and college.

In addition to our programs, the Metro District offers educational materials, brochures, and videos for use in the classroom. Unfortunately, we have had to suspend class tours of our treatment plant for now because of millions of dollars worth of construction in the plant.
